Board Seeking New Member in Operations Role
by Board of Directors
Your Board’s Nominating Committee would like to identify qualified candidates to serve on the Board as one of our current member’s terms expires. We are seeking a new board member to serve as Operations Chair. The Board thanks Trey Fouche for his contributions, support, service and perspectives over his term.
As you may remember from prior communications, your Board has committed a great deal of time and effort to develop actual roles and responsibilities for each Board member. For instance, a Treasurer manages our finances including debt, plans for future expenses, and reports on the financial health of the business. A Governance Chair leads Board development, evaluates effectiveness and succession plans, and ensures compliance. An Activities Chair leads the community-building events and opportunities that drive participation, such as but not limited to swim team and member parties.
The formula for success at the Swimming Hole is pretty simple now that our major capital project is mostly behind us and our financial state is clear. Over the course of the past several years, your Board has established standard practices to not only ensure the business runs smoothly and members receive valuable services, but also so anyone who understands the basics of running a business and serving customers can successfully serve on the Board.
We run a relatively simple business. Written standard practices now in place. The organization just needs people to serve on its Board who understand that, while not-for-profit, we all own an actual business that needs to be run effectively.
Please see the responsibilities below for serving as Operations Chair on our Board.
Operations Chair Role
The Operations Chair is essentially responsible for one main thing: The relationship the Board maintains with vendor partners. Because third-party vendors mostly provide for the services that make our membership experience more or less safe and enjoyable, the role of the Operations Chair is key to ensuring the value of membership.
Three(3) key qualities outline the requirements for Operations Chair:
- No requirement for prior professional operational experience, but a keen sense for the importance of written standard procedures is required.
- Ability and willingness to clearly communicate expectations to vendor partners is a must.
- Time commitment itself is about 2-3hrs per week in the off-season and about 5-7hrs/ week during the pool season. (Don’t sweat it too much…fellow Board members cover your responsibilities when you are on summer vacation, which is one of the purposes of written standard practices.)
Profile of a Board Member:
- Citizen of the Town of Davidson and Swimming Hole member in good standing.
- Strong desire to work with others on a team to accomplish stated goals rooted in the Mission and Core Beliefs of our pool.
- Conveys an affinity for the Swimming Hole, its heritage and its ability to serve today’s member lifestyles in keeping with the organization’s stated Mission & Core Beliefs
- Considers operational performance/efficiencies. Will protect & preserve assets of the business. Can be trusted with fiduciary responsibilities.
- Demonstrates the ability or the willingness to learn and adopt written standard operating procedures, proper Board protocol, governance & etiquette.
- Able to give the time necessary to serve, which can vary in and out of the pool season.
Please reach out to Mitchell Feld (mitchell.feld@gmail.com) by August 29 if you are interested in serving or would like to nominate a fellow member.
Thank you,
Board of Directors
